A moment's insight is sometimes worth a lifetime's experience.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
Computers were supposed to make our life easier... 30 years on, if they have or not is a topic that will be debated for another 30 years or more I am sure!
While they make information easier to find they have also given us a lot more to remember.
Finding external information is easy. Just hit up Google, Bing or Wikipedia on your web browser.
But what do you do about your personal information?
Before computers, many people kept a diary, and put all the notes of things they had to remember in the notes section. Great until you have to transfer everything to next years diary, or worse still, lose your diary.
Then there is the question of security - you can't exactly 'secure' a diary. My sister had one with a little padlock on the front - cute, but really? two seconds with a paper clip to get past that (and yes, she asked me to do this when she lost the key!)
So what is the best way to keep track of everything now?
Have you heard of the KISS principal? Keep it simple, stupid!
That could be one of the most important aspects - if the process is not simple, you wont do it anyway!
I use a program called AZZ CardFile.
AZZ CardFile is my memory dump of things I need to remember - for example:
- People I need to notify when my credit card expires and I get a new one so automatic payments don't bounce.
- Serial numbers/model numbers of equipment
- Login's and passwords
- Birthdays
- Computer and Router settings
- Settings for Websites that I manage
- Website addresses that I find useful
But as this program is so flexible, I know other people use it for:
- Recipe database
- Catalog DVD's they own
- Shopping Lists
- Gym exercise program
- To-do lists
Let's face it - basically anything you can remember - or forget!
And it's not just for putting in text, but also pictures and more....
But wait, there's more!
you can also get a bunch of free databases that other users have contributed - worth it for that alone!
The best thing is that AZZ CardFile has a great search feature, so actually finding the information you want to remember is easy.
After starting to use this program, I now rely on it, and could not live without it!
- Well, I could live without it, I just would be buried neck high in sticky-notes
Give it a try, AZZ CardFile has a free trial, see what you think.
You can get AZZ CardFile here, and I would love to know what uses you come up with!
Warmly, Marty
